HA NOI (VNS)— Some of the most popular pieces by the late couple, playwriter Luu Quang Vu and poet Nguyen Thi Xuan Quynh, will be read at an evening commemorating their work in central Ha Noi on August 25.
Titled Luu Quang Vu-Xuan Quynh Art Night, the recital includes a selection of poems and songs based on their works, read by experienced writers such as Le Chuc and Phan Muon.
Loi The Thu 9 (The Ninth Vow) by Vu will then be performed to remind the audience of one of the country’s most talented contemporary writers in his time, who wrote several profound plays including Toi Va Chung Ta (Me and We) and Hon Truong Ba, Da Hang Thit (Truong Ba Soul in a Butcher’s Body).
The Ninth Vow will spotlight noted northern artists like People’s Artist Le Khanh and renowned artists Duc Khue and Ngoc Huyen.
The show is organised to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the death of the talented couple, who both died in a road accident in 1988, together with their son Luu Quynh Tho, when they were in their heyday.
A festival featuring plays by Vu will also be held early next month by the Viet Nam Theatre Artists’ Association.
Poet and playwright Vu (born in 1948) was posthumously bestowed a Ho Chi Minh Prize for Literature and Arts in 2000 while his wife, Quynh (born in 1942) remains immortal to fans of Vietnamese poetry of all ages with her poems that highlighted love, the country and people’s affections towards each other.
Many of Vu’s screenplays have hit the stage and several have won prizes at national festivals over the past number of years.
The event on August 25, which is co-produced by the Youth Theatre and the Dong Do Company, will take place at the Friendship Culture Palace, 91 Tran Hung Dao Street. — VNS
