VN human rights policy ‘consistent'

HA NOI (VNS)— Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Luong Thanh Nghi on Saturday reaffirmed Viet Nam's consistent policy of protecting human rights and improving people's living standards.

Nghi was responding reporters' questions on the US House of Representatives' adoption of the Viet Nam Human Rights Act 2013.

"Viet Nam has attained many achievements in ensuring human rights in all fields, ranging from civil society, politics and economics to culture and social welfare, that have gained international recognition and appreciation," said the spokesperson.

Upholding human rights is a key factor contributing to the success of Viet Nam's renewal process over the past years, said Nghi.

According to the spokesperson, Viet Nam and the US have so far maintained regular dialogue on human rights. The dialogue, based on straightforward, constructive and mutual respect, plays an important role in enhancing mutual understanding and further developing bilateral ties for the benefit of both nations.

"The erroneous and prejudiced information on human rights and religious freedom in Viet Nam indicated in the bill does not correctly reflect the real situation in Viet Nam, and is not in line with the development of the two countries' relations," said Nghi. — VNS
