This is the situation of Thach Thi Ngoc Dung, 29, in Tra Khao Hamlet, Cau Ke District, Tra Vinh Province.
For more than 20 years, Dung’s mother Nguyen Thi Muoi Lam, has been living with many incurable diseases such as heart failure, bronchial asthma and nephritis. Not only all four limbs but also her face and belly are swollen. She has trouble breathing and sleeping, and whenever she goes to Tra Vinh General Hospital, she is immediately taken to the emergency room in order to receive oxygen. At the moment she is also in treatment at Cau Ke District General Hospital.
Dung's mother has been living with many incurable diseases for more than 20 years To make matters worse, her husband left home just after she gave birth to her son Thach Ngoc Diep in 1990.
In 2000, when Diep was 11 years old, he was diagnosed with congenital heart problems at Tra Vinh General Hospital. After that, he was sent to HCM City Children’s Hospital No. 1. Doctors there said he was suffering from pneumonia, level 3-4 heart failure and several other dangerous diseases. Then he was sent to HCM City Heart Hospital for surgery, costing his family USD2,711.
In 2013, Diep had difficulty breathing, felt exhausted and suffered continual pain. Borrowing VND2 million (USD95.2) from relatives, he came to HCM City Heart Hospital and was diagnosed with Endocarditis and congenital DMC stenosis. The fee for the prescribed operation was estimated at VND130 million.
Diep could not sleep for the anxiety caused by the big fees he would have to pay
Realising his situation, Diep was numb with grief and could not sleep for the anxiety caused by the big fees he would have to pay. Meanwhile, his family could not even be sure of eating a daily meal.
In the dilapidated house, Dung holds her baby, while feeding her mother. She said she has to sell lottery tickets every day in order to to earn around VND60,000. She takes her daughter along when she does this–she has no choice. Whenever her mother or younger brothers are taken to hospital, she has to borrow money.
Dung’s husband left her when her child was just two years old and sometimes she is so exhausted she can barely drag herself out to sell lottery tickets.
Nguyen Van Quy, Chairman of Cau Ke District’s Red Cross, said this family is in such difficulty because only Dung is able to work to take care of two people who are coping with serious diseases. He expected donors and agencies to give them financial aid so that Mrs Lam and her son can be given the necessary treatment.
