(VOV) – Heavy downpours on September 3 caused flash floods and landslides in the northern mountain province of Lai Chau, killing three local people.
A trough of low pressure, which is striking across the northern region, brought heavy rains to Dao San mountain commune of Lai Chau’s Phong Tho district, with rainfall of up to 120mm reported in some places.
A huge amount of floodwaters flowing into Ban Lang commune in the same district triggered flash floods and landslides, killing two local people.
A landslide also occurred in Pa Vay Su commune of Phong Tho district and a local teacher was also found dead under the rubble.
Flash floods washed away a number of houses and shelters, animals and chickens in border mountain communes. Inter-communal traffic was disrupted.
The Lai Chau provincial government has dispatched missions to the natural disaster-hit localities to provide emergency aid and help local people stabilise their lives.
The unusual weather pattern is forecast to dump more heavy rain on Lai Chau and other provinces in the north in the coming days.
