Nhan Dan Online - Top Vietnam badminton player Nguyen Tien Minh earned his first win at the 2013 Japan Super Series, beating his Chinese rival Wang Zhengming 2-1 in Tokyo this morning.
Minh had recorded two wins against Wang in their previous meetings, but the Chinese player had great momentum after reaching the semi-finals at the 2013 Badminton Asia Championships, beating the World No. 3, Du Pengyu, to take the 2013 Swiss Open title, and being crowned champion at the 2013 China Masters Super Series last week.
Minh, seeded No. 5 at the tournament, fought hard to earn points in the first set as Wang, 10th in the Badminton World Federation (BWF) rankings, took control of the game, overwhelming Minh and taking a 21-14 win with 16 powerful smash points.
However, the experience of World No. 7 Minh helped him fight back in the second set. He scored nine consecutive points to defeat Wang 21-11.
Inspired by the win, Minh went on to defeat his Chinese rival 21-14 in the third set, finishing his vigorous comeback to reach the second round of the Japan Super Series.
Minh drew Japan’s Kento Momota (World No. 35), who defeated his compatriot Riichi Takeshita 21-18, 21-14, to reach the second round.
The 2013 YONEX Open Japan Super Series, held in Tokyo from September 17-22, is the eighth super series tournament of the 2013 BWF Super Series. The event has a total purse of US$200,000.
