The project is due to cooperation between HCMC and Lyon City, France to artistically illuminate the post office, instead of the public safety lighting as before.

In particular, the government of Lyon City will support expenditure on designing and equipment, while HCMC’s government will pay for construction expense and some equipment.

Located next to Notre-Dame Cathedral in downtown HCMC, the HCMC Central Post Office is an outstanding display of French design influenced by Renaissance architecture. It is more than 120 years old and is one of the main attractions for tourists exploring the city.

The governments of Lyon City and HCMC have collaborated to carry out some artistic lighting projects before. In particular, they helped light up Nha Rong Museum in 1994, HCMC People’s Committee in 2004 and HCMC Opera House in 2008.

Currently, the city is mapping out plans to conduct similar projects in other architectural works in downtown HCMC. After the post office, the city’s authorities will focus on Reunification Palace, Notre-Dame Cathedral and HCMC Museum.
