The three-day festival took place in Can Thanh Commune, featuring a series of colorful activities such as visiting Sac Forest revolutionary base, garlands-releasing events, folk games, art kite flying, a martial art show as well as rituals on worshipping the whale. The festival also attracted more than 200 boats of local fishermen to make a huge parade on Can Gio sea.
The festival is a chance for fishermen to express their gratitude towards the Nam Hai god (whale) and sea gods for protecting and supporting fishermen in their daily lives and at sea, and to pray for peace and a good harvest.
Nghinh Ong Festival is celebrated from the 15th, 16th and 17th days of August on the lunar calendar with festivities including various rituals to worship the whale and prayers for good seas, happiness and prosperity.
With many folk stories attached to it, the Nghinh Ong Festival in Can Gio District has its own distinctive characteristics compared to other festivals around the country.
