Nhan Dan – Talented Vietnamese director Dang Nhat Minh was awarded the Kim Dae-jung Nobel Peace Film Award at the 2013 Gwangju International Film Festival, which is being held in Korea and runs from August 29 to September 2.

Minh, born in 1938 in Hue, is renowned for his 1984 film entitled When the Tenth Month Comes, which was picked as one of the best Asian films of all time by CNN.


He is a former General Secretary of the Vietnam Cinema Association and has won many accolades for his contributions to the development of the Vietnam film industry.


In 1999, Minh was the first Vietnamese person to receive the Nikkei Asia Prize for Culture in honour of his tireless efforts to make distinguished films that introduce the soul and sensitivities of Asian people to the world.


One of his most recent films, Do Not Burn, won the audience prize at the 19th annual Fukuoka Film Festival in 2009. The film was based on a famous diary kept by Dang Thuy Tram, a female doctor who served at a field hospital during the Vietnam War.


The annual Kim Dae-jung film award, named after the late president of the Republic of Korea, Kim Dae-jung, the 2000 Nobel Peace Prize laureate, is presented to film-makers for outstanding works that artfully address social issues.
