The Hoa Binh Hydroelectric Plant has eight generators and was constructed from January 1979 to April 1994 with total capacity of 1,920 MW. The construction work includes rock dams, a reservoir, a hydroelectric plant and an outdoor power distribution station.

In the morning when the sun has not risen, sailing on the Da River in the sunrise, tourists will see dim fog on the surface of the river, making it a very beautiful scenery. When the sun rises, this area even fascinates travelers more with beautiful terrace fields and rustling wind from the forests, creating a polyphonic piece of music from the mountains and forests.

Coming to Thung Nai Ecotourism Area, tourists cannot miss to visit the famous Ba Chua Thac Bo Temple with a legend about a fairy who led the Muong ethnic group to fight against the foreign aggressors.

The Hoa Binh Hydroelectric Plant was constructed with comprehensive support from the former Soviet Union, from the design, facilities supply, instruction, construction monitoring to operation and repairs. Nearly 40,000 staff, engineers and workers including 900 Soviet Union experts participated in the work. Built in the country’s most difficult time of transformation period, it took over 1,200 days for workers to dig 15 km of underground tunnels to equip dozen tonnes of equipment and machines.

Special envoy of the government Thai Phung Ne affirmed that the Hoa Binh Hydroelectric Plant was called the work of the 20th century (the Son La Hydroelectric Plant was not constructed at the time). It was not only the symbol of friendship between Soviet Union and Vietnam but also played a particularly important role in electrical modulation system and flood prevention. Every year, Hoa Binh Lake prevents from four to six big floods with capacity ranging from 10,000-22.650 cu.m per second.

To get to the power operating station, visitors have to go through a very clean and magnificent underground tunnel with a splendid lighting system which looks like an underground palace.

After visiting the dams, tourists will be guided to offer incense at the 18 meter high Uncle Ho Statue made of white granite on the Ong Mountain and other places of interests such as the monument for Vietnamese and Soviet Union who died here during construction of the plant and the Hoa Binh Hydroelectric Museum./.
