‘Make the World Cleaner’ campaign was launched in Da Lat City in the central highland province of Lam Dong on September 21.
According to Bui Cach Tuyen, Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Environment, the country has faced several problems such as illegal deforestation, rampant and uncontrollable forest fires, land recession, unreasonable use of water and minerals, decline of biodiversity and increasing environmental pollution.
Environmental pollution costs Vietnam up to 5,5% of the national GDP annually, according to recent assessments made by the World Bank. The country also has to spend US$ 780 million each year on public healthcare due to environmental pollution.
On the same day, the campaign was also organized in Ho Chi Minh City. The campaign aims to emphasize the role of each individual in protecting the environment.
The City called on people to put garbage in appropriate places, improve water sources and canals, and use products good for the environment.
Hundreds of youth, students and residents planted trees and cleaned up a canal in Binh Chanh District on launch day of the program.
The ‘Make the World Cleaner’ campaign was initiated by Australia in 1989 and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) on a global scale in 1993, and is held during the third week of September every year.
