Live report: State funeral for General Giap

The memorial service and casket-moving ceremonies for General Vo Nguyen Giap was held at 7am on October 13.



The event was attended by high-ranking officials and former officials of the State and the Party Committee, the Army Force, representatives of diplomatic agencies, leaders of foreign delegations, and the General’s relatives.


Tens of thousands of mourners gathered close to the national morgue on 5 Tran Thanh Tong Street in Hanoi where the General’s coffin was placed to pay their last respects to him.


10:15am: Party leader Nguyen Phu Trong and other State and Party high-ranking officials put hands together before the civil aircraft ATR72. The airplane is ready to take off.


10am: The convoy arrived at Noi Bai airport. The military hearse carrying General Giap’s coffin proceeded to the Vietnam Airlines ATR72 plane that is tasked with transporting the coffin from Noi Bai to Dong Hoi airport in Quang Binh where another motorcade was ready to drive the coffin to his resting place in Yen Island in Quang Dong commune, Quang Trach district.

8:50am: The convoy went through an area in Cau Giay district and headed towards Noi Bai airport.


8:45am: Though the convoy left Hoang Dieu Street, many people still flocked there. One mourner held up a portrait of General Giap with some words underneath, saying “Paying last tribute to the General of the People”. Many others looked at his home and cried.


8:40am: The convoy headed towards Noi Bai International Airport where an airplane was ready to fly his remains to his native home land in Quang Binh central province for burial service.

8:37am: Tens of thousands of mourners in Cau Giay district queued in order to pay their last respects to the General.


8:35am: The hearse carrying General Giap’s body stopped at 30 Hoang Dieu Street – the residential home of General Giap in Hanoi.

8:14am: The convoy proceeded to Ba Dinh Square.


8am: The convoy was followed by thousands of mourners. Many people on Tran Hung Dao Street held up the General’s portrait and cried.


7:40 am: When the coffin was moved off the morgue, tens of thousands of people stood up to see the coffin. All of them cried and shouted loudly the name of the General.


The convoy went through major streets in Hanoi including Le Thanh Tong, Trang Tien, Trang Thi, Dien Bien Phu, Ba Dinh Square and his residential home on Hoang Dieu Street, before heading towards Noi Bai airport.


7:37 am: The coffin covered with a national flag was placed in a hearse with a cannon attached.


7:30 am: The ceremony of casket moving began. The General’s remains were moved by pallbearers in military uniform out of the national morgue and were escorted by Party leader Nguyen Phu Trong, State President Truong Tan Sang, National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Sinh Hung, and Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung.

7:25 am: State and Party officials and international guests and representatives of General Giap’s family walked around the coffin of General Giap.


7:17am: Vo Dien Bien, the eldest son of General Giap, on behalf of the General’s relatives conveyed thanks to the State, the army force, hospital staff at Army Hospital 108 where the General received treatment during last days of his life. The son also gave thanks to the Party and the State for creating best conditions for the family to bring his father’s remains to Yen Island in the central province of Quang Binh for burial service in accordance with the General’s wishes.

7:15am: Party leader Nguyen Phu Trong delivered a funeral oration in praise of General Vo Nguyen Giap.


7am: Nguyen Xuan Phuc, Deputy Prime Minister of Vietnam, announced the beginning of the memorial service for General Vo Nguyen Giap.
