The People’s Committee of Kien Giang Province has agreed to a plan by national flag carrier Vietnam Airlines to launch two new flight routes from the Mekong Delta province’s Phu Quoc Island to Singapore and Cambodia.

According to the plan, the two new routes will be put into operation at Phu Quoc International Airport on November 1, with two flights to Singapore and three flights to Cambodia per week.

Meanwhile, a delegation of Korean Air and South Korean travel company Hanjin Travel recently arrived in Phu Quoc to discuss with local authorities another plan to open a route from Phu Quoc International Airport to the Incheon airport in South Korea.

Currently, the two sides are making preparations for the launch of the new route.

The new services will not only meet the increased demand for air travel but also help promote the image of the island as an attractive tourist destination to other countries, the provincial People’s Committee said.

The committee added the coming air services will create favorable conditions for the implementation of the social and economic development strategy of Kien Giang Province in general and Phu Quoc District in particular.

Currently, Phu Quoc International Airport is handling 20 flights per day to and from Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.

The number of flights on the Russia-Phu Quoc route will increase from six to 10 per month late this year to serve international travelers, especially Russians, on the occasion of Christmas and New Year, the committee said.
