By 2050 the sea level off the Mekong Delta coast is likely to rise by 0.5m and by a metre another 30 years later.
If it does rise by 1m high, seawater could affect most of the delta’s coastal region, meaning important structures like electricity plants and ports should not be built there, scientists from Viet Nam National University – Ha Noi warned.
Rising seas levels are also set to affect the Hong (Red) River delta and the central province of Thua Thien Hue.

Fires devastate VN in 2013, killing 32
In the fist nine months of this year there have been 1,920 fires and explosions around the country, killing 32 people, injuring 99, causing losses of VND780 billion (US$33 million), and destroying 750ha of forest.
Electricity grid and equipment accidents accounted for 43 per cent of the fires and explosions.
There were 47 more fires than in the same period of last year, but 35 fewer people were killed and 12 fewer wounded while loss to property reduced by VND50 billion ($2.4 million).

Banks to donate $2.4m to Spratly Islands
The State Bank of Viet Nam has started a 10-day donation campaign for Truong Sa (Spratly) Islands.
It hopes to collect VND50 billion (US$2.4 million) for building and upgrading facilities for people living there.

60,000 businesses established this year
So far this year, around 60,000 firms with a total capital of VND282 billion (US$14 million) have registered to do business, a year-on-year rise of 11 per cent.
Of them, 11,300 have resumed business following a temporary halt.
On the other hand, 42,500 firms have closed down, an increase of 12.8 per cent.

Investment surges in HCM City industrial zones
In the year-to-date investment in HCM City’s industrial and processing zones topped US$480 million, 48 per cent higher than in the same period last year.
Foreign investment accounted for $341 million, an increase of 114 per cent, but most of them are in small and medium-sized projects.
Domestic investment was down 15.7 per cent.
