Hundreds of elementary school students in central Vietnam have had to study at a Confucius temple because there aren’t enough classrooms in their school.

Many parents complained that their children, enrolled at Cam Pho Elementary School located in Quang Nam Province, are studying in low-light makeshift classrooms at the local Temple of Confucius.

Many parents complained that their children, enrolled at Cam Pho Elementary School located in Quang Nam Province, are studying in low-light makeshift classrooms at the local Temple of Confucius.

Cam Pho has moved over 140 fourth and fifth graders to the temple since September because the school has a severe lack of classrooms, Tuoi Tre has learned.

The kids are crammed into four stuffy areas separated by wooden partitions that fail to block noise.

“They study in cramped rooms where there is not enough light even though the lights are on all day,” a parent told Tuoi Tre.

A vice principal explained that the kids have been relocated as four old classrooms at the school’s campus were demolished.

“We took apart four deteriorating classrooms over the summer,” Vuong Huu Chung said, “Twelve new rooms are under construction. We plan to bring the students back to the main campus next January, when construction is finished.”

Local education official Nguyen Van Dung said that the school board had tried to temporarily place the students in nearby schools during construction of the new classrooms, but they were already too crowded.

“They did not have any vacant rooms,” Dung said. “But we will provide more support to improve the conditions at the temple while waiting for the completion of the new facilities.”

The school year in Vietnam often begins in late August or early September and ends in late May or early June.
