Culturally, Russia is one of the Western cultures admired by all of humanity. As time goes by, Russian culture still retains its own characteristic identities. Russia has more than 16 ethnic groups, each with its own culture, but they all carry the common characteristic of Russians. Russian architecture has long been known by countryside wooden houses. Russian handicrafts also carry very deep Russian folk culture. Russian cinematography plays a very important role in portraying the Russian culture and is deserved to be called as the cradle of world cinema culture. Russia also has many ancient theatrical genres such as opera, music, ballet and drama. Besides, Russia is also the cradle of the education system. The Russian Academy has been training the best persons of all fields. The daily costumes and livelihoods of Russian people characterise the Russian culture.


Russia is also renowned for its long-standing culture of many unique festivals which reflect the daily farming work in the temperate land of birch and snow like Maslenitsa – Goodbye to Winter Festival, Winter Ivan Kupala Festival, and Summer Ivan Kupala Festival. Russia also has major holidays such as Christmas Day of Orthodox Christianity, Kolyadki Festival, Easter Festival, Red Hill Festival, Troits Festival, Spas Festivals, and Goodbye to Winter Festival.


Currently, many Vietnamese people are living in Russia and understand Russian culture like the Russians themselves. They, coming from all walks of life, live, work and study in Russia and create a vibrant commercial market with hundreds of thousands of consumers. Many Vietnamese people have become rich in Russia.


Vietnam and Russia have regularly coordinated to organise many cultural exchanges over the past years. Typical events include Hanoi Days in Moscow, Vietnam Cultural Days in Russia (2008), Russian Film Week in Hanoi, and Russian Cultural Days in Vietnam (2010). Recently, in the framework of Vietnam Culture Days in Russia in 2013, many content-rich events have been organised in order to introduce the beauty of Vietnam, like photo exhibitions on the beauty of Vietnam in the integrating world, Russian literature forums in Vietnam, and Vietnamese literature forums in Russia.


In contrast, Russia also has its Russian cultural days in Vietnam. This is also an opportunity to boost culture and tourism ties between the two countries. Vietnam and Russia have already promoted expert and personnel training cooperation programmes in the culture, arts and tourism fields.


The Russian Science and Culture Centre in Hanoi is a Russian address in Vietnam which is actively popularising Russian culture and arts to Vietnamese people. Through this centre’s literary and artistic activities, Vietnamese people become acquainted with Russian cultural achievements. One of the important activities at this centre is to carry out the Russian Government-backed programme for popularity and development of the Russian language. Hence, it has organised a lot of Russian language training courses at different levels. In an exhibition on personnel development on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the centre, Director Alexey Lavrenev asserted that the operations of the centre are helping enhance understanding, strengthening and expanding the Russian – Vietnamese friendship.


Vietnamese President Truong Tan Sang urged the sides to accelerate cultural cooperation. He said the two sides should continue coordinating in studying and proposing measures and plans to enhance bilateral cultural exchanges, with a particular emphasis on educating the young to understand, treasure and nurture the fine traditional relationships between Vietnam and Russia.
