Japan is preparing to send 1,000 troops from its Self-Defense Forces (SDF) to the Philippines to
assist in the rescue, relief and recovery efforts after the super Typhoon Haiyan.

On November 13, Defence Minister Itsunori Onodera said it is necessary to send troops for emergency relief work to the Philippines after Typhoon Haiyan, one of the worst to pummel the archipelago, left thousands dead in its wake.

The SDF is also preparing to send three warships, as well as a transport aircraft and helicopters, to the Philippines.

The mission could be bigger than Japan’s relief efforts after the 2004 tsunami devastated Indonesia’s Aceh province.

The government plans to dispatch the SDF troops as soon as it receives an official request from the Southeast Asian country.

About 50 troops of SDF have already arrived to the Philippines to discuss with the Philippine Government plans to deploy the mission./.
