(CPV) - The Embassy of Denmark and Vietnam Association for Diabetes and Endocrinology (VADE) will organise the “Diabetes Advocacy Forum” in Hanoi on November 28 as a prompt response to the rapidly growing problem with diabetes in Vietnam.

Danish Ambassador to Vietnam, Mr John Nielsen, stressed the importance of the forum, saying: “Vietnam is among the countries in the world with the highest growth rate of diabetes affecting people from all social classes and age groups. With this initiative, we bring together the key stakeholders to discuss how to address this challenge and improve the quality of diabetes care in Vietnam for the benefit of the Vietnamese people”.

Earlier this year, the Danish Embassy worked with the Vietnam Mountain Marathon under the heading “Changing Diabetes”. The event highlighted the great importance of a healthy lifestyle in relation to diabetes prevention.

In the 1990s, diabetes incidence among the Vietnamese population group aged 20-79 was 1.2%. The rate jumped to 2.7% in 2002, 5.3% in 2012, and 5.8% in 2013, putting Vietnam among countries that have the highest growth rate of diabetes patients worldwide. The change in lifestyle, lack of physical activities and improper nutritional regime are blamed for the rapidly rising rate of diabetic patients in Vietnam./.
