This figure was released in a meeting between 13 Mekong River Delta provinces and Ho Chi Minh city (HCMC) held in Vinh Long province on November 26.
From 2001 to now, enterprises in HCMC invested into 23 export processing zones and industrial parks in 13 provinces and cities in the Mekong Delta region, with more than 1,000 projects in the fields of agriculture, aquaculture, transport infrastructure, trade, service and tourism, said the city People’s Committee.
Nguyen Phong Quang, Standing Deputy Head of the Southwestern Steering Board, said that the Mekong Delta has strengths in rice production, seafood, fruit, vegetables and crops, and breeding. However, aiming at stable consumption, products should be consumed in HCMC because the city is a major market. Even exporting the commodities and products of the Mekong Delta to foreign markets requires assistance from HCMC’s enterprises. For these, provinces and cities in Mekong Delta need to cooperate with the southern hub.
Le Hoang Quang, Chairman of the HCMC People’s Committee said that cooperation between HCMC and Mekong Delta Provinces has not only economic benefits, but also political, cultural and social significances. Thus, HCMC will offer opportunities for enterprises to intensify investment in the Mekong Delta.
Besides supporting the consumption of agricultural products, enterprises in HCMC needs to associate more closely with relevant agencies, farmers and co-operatives to build large-scale material areas in the Mekong Delta. In addition, the city should assist farmers in the region to produce under VietGap and Global Gap standards to boost domestic consumption and serve exports./.
