On November 5, in Hanoi, Vietnam Environment Administration in collaboration with United Nations Development Program and United Nations Industrial Development Organization organized a meeting to exchange and share information within the framework of the implementation of mercury pollution control under the Minamata Convention on mercury.
Deputy General Director of Vietnam Environmental Administration Nguyen The Dong attended and chaired the meeting,. Representatives from UNDP’s and UNIDO and Chemicals Department, Ministry of Industry and Trade are also attended the meeting.
Mr Nguyen The Dong spoke at the meeting that in Vietnam under the pressure of economic and social development, environmental pollution caused by chemical emissions has become a major problem. Based on the experience of countries in the world, chemical emissions control is an effective way to control environmental pollution. However, this approach is relatively new to Vietnam.
According to environmental report wastewater and gas emission which discharged into the environment may contain toxic compounds and heavy metals. The waste having a very high amount of toxicity with long-term accumulation will cause adverse impacts on the environment and human health.
Deputy General Director Nguyen The Dong stressed that VEA and Ministry of Natural Resources andEnvironment are well aware of the problem and working closely with the relevant organizations to promote chemicals pollution control.
He hoped that the meeting would be a good opportunity for VEA and related organizations to work closely together in the mercury emission control in Vietnam. Also at the meeting,
representatives have presented and discussed issues related to the control of mercury emissions.
