Chef Bobby Chinn announced a menu at his restaurant featuring responsibly-sourced products. Much of the seafood in the dishes comes from Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) and Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC)-certified companies.

“More people need to understand the direct link between the seafood on their plate and the state of our ocean’s resources,” Chinn said. “I hope that through collaborative efforts like these, we can have a bigger impact on the way people choose seafood.”

Steve Fisher, Managing Director of Sea Delight – one of the biggest importers of Vietnamese seafood, said that Sea Delight is not only an importer but also a consultant telling fishermen how to change their fishing habits for the better. Over the past year, Sea Delight encouraged and told fishermen in Binh Dinh Province how to catch tuna on a sustainable basis. Sea Delight has provided guidelines for 100 fishing boats in Binh Dinh to use long fish-hooks instead of round fish-hooks; this has helped increase catches and improved the quality of catches and avoided unexpected effects on other marine creatures such as sea turtles, Steve Fisher said.

“Without urgent transformative measures from fishing companies, seafood retailers, and consumers, fish stocks will continue to decline and we may not have enough fish resources left in the near future to secure our food and livelihood,” said Ngo Tien Chuong, WWF Vietnam’s Aquaculture Coordinator.

WWF Vietnam is working with the private sector and the community to help improve seafood catching and aquaculture through projects assisting the fishery sector to apply better management measures, reach the MSC and ASC certification.

WWF Vietnam expects that this new model will act as a trailblazer and be successfully applied to other industries in Vietnam and help Vietnamese industries, especially fisheries and aquaculture to move towards sustainable development./.
