Vietnam’s traditional water puppetry has attracted the attention of many international friends, with many performances presenting the spirit of Vietnam’s countryside. Daily life of people in the Red Delta and the profoundly humane fairy tales are shown in water stage with animated puppets.

In order to make traditional water puppetry more attractive, and present more thrilling and complicated stories close to the present life, for the first time, Vietnam water puppetry has brought foreign literary works into the stage. The Vietnam Water Puppet Theatre has cooperated with French Interart Riviera SA to implement art projects in three performances: The Steadfast Tin Soldier, The Little Mermaid, and The Ugly Duckling, based on the fairy tales by Danish author Andersen. The works have completed final preparations to be staged. According to Mr Nguyen Tien Dung, Deputy Director of Vietnam Puppetry Theatre, with the support of the French, the theatre has rehearsed these 3 performances for over a month. The first show starts in December 2013 and the next will be held in June, July and December 2014.

Mr Jean Luc Larguier, Representative of Interart Riviera SA, shared his feelings about the collaboration and enthusiasm of artists of the theatre in the process of building the project. To prepare for this artwork, the artists have taken elaborate steps from creating the puppets of the characters of the stories, the music theme, the sound; the water surface on the stage must be designed according to the requirements of layout art, stage conversation will be adapted to be closer to real life. In this work, the content and dialogue are about friendship and humanity.

According to Mr Jean Luc Larguier, this will be the first activity as a precondition for the next cooperation between Interart and Vietnam Water Puppet Theatre. He said France has partnered with the Puppet Theatre since 2005 in the project ‘The master and the puppet ‘, and now continue with the project ‘ Andersen’s fairy tales’. “We will also continue the collaborative art project in the next year to promote the traditional art of water puppetry in Vietnam to France and Europe,” he said.

Representatives of the International Cooperation Department, Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism said the art project “Andersen’s fairy tales” presented by water puppetry touring in France and some European countries is to promote “Vietnam – France year 2013-2014″ and the 40th anniversary of establishing diplomatic relations between Vietnam and France (1973-2013).
