A poor widow and her three small children, who live in a remote area of An Giang Province, are in desperate need of help after her husband died from an electric shock.
Huong and her three children Living in a remote area, Neang Huong and her husband, Chau Nanl, lived without electricity until three days ago. Chau Nanl did not turn off the circuit breaker before trying to fidget with the electric box and received a fatal shock.
Huong said they do not have any land to grow rice so they have to make palm sugar for a man in the village. Nanl was the breadwinner of the family. He would collect the sap from Asian palmyra palm trees, make the sugar, and did other jobs on the side. The local authorities helped to build their house 10 years ago but it has deteriorated quickly.
Huynh Van Dang, head of Tay Hung Hamlet, said Huong had three children, the oldest is in fifth grade, the second has entered the first grade and the youngest is just learning how to walk. Dang further explained that the parents of both Huong and Nanl are also poor and cannot provide any help.
Nanl’s altar Neang Quat, Huong’s mother, said Nanl worked very hard, but because two oldest children were in school, the money is just not enough. Now their children may have to drop out. “My wish is for my children to go to school so they can escape this poverty. Now that my husband died, I hope I’ll remain healthy so I can work and care for them,” Huong said. Currently, Huong accepts every little job she can do, such as chopping wood or making sugar. Since the youngest kid is often ill and jobs are few, Huong’s neighbours help to look after the kids and give her rice.
Sagging house Tang Tieu Phi, head of Tinh Bien Power and Water Supply JSC, said he supported Huong and the children with a personal contribution of VND500,000 (USD24) and sent employees to fix their electricity. Soc Hao Sen Area, in Tay Hung Hamlet has about 90 Khmer residents, of whom 95% live in poverty. The vice chairman of Nhon Hung Commune, Nguyen Thanh Bao, said they were able to collect VND3 million in donations from people for Nanl’s funeral. “We have plans to rebuild the deteriorated houses but we still lack funds to realise those plans,” he said.
