Teacher Le Quoc Vi is always aware of the importance of preserving and promoting Vietnamese language among overseas Vietnamese (OV) living in Thailand.
Born in 1955, part of the first OV generation in Thailand, the teacher can speak Thai fluently, and also Vietnamese. Thus, he always wants to encourage young Vietnamese children and students living and studying in Thailand to preserve Vietnamese language.
Passing down the oral tradition from one generation to another, Vi’s family organized part-time classes from 1st to 7th grade at home for other Vietnamese parents, who in turn teach their children.
Benefiting from his own family class, Vi continued to carry out his family tradition of teaching Vietnamese to his descendants in Thailand since he was 15 years old.
For years, he has continued honing his Vietnamese and taught it to many OVs in Thailand while he was working as an electrician.
In 2000, he was offered a position as a member of the Advisory Board of International Relations by the Ubon Ratchathani Royal University.
In addition to giving lectures at the university, he is currently the General Secretary of the Vietnam Association in Ubon Ratchathani province.
Whenever he has a chance to meet with OV communities abroad, he always calls on them to preserve Vietnamese language, as well as actively popularize the culture, tradition and people of Vietnam.
He also contributes to improving the quality of the Vietnamese learning curriculum in many schools in Thailand.
With 40 years experience in teaching Vietnamese to the Vietnamese community in Thailand and Thai people, Vi hopes that Vietnamese language will always be preserved and used by many people around the world.
