Due to the impact of storm no.15, lots of rice paddy fields and ditches in the province have been sedemented or swept away. Therefore, the draining land as well as damming the banks to preserve water, opening the water channel for meeting the time of sowing the winter-spring crop is a the top priority of the agricultural sector and people, once the sowing schedule is approaching.
As to the statistics of Tuy Hoa city’s economic division, due to the impacts of storm no.15, 0.8ha of the paddy fields have been sedemented, landslide, some water drainage channels have also been sedemented with constructing stones falling down. Sedimented channels have caused nearly 50ha of hollow fields in the wards of Phu Lam, Phu Thanh, Phu Dong and the two communes of Binh Kien, Binh Ngoc over flooded, causing difficulties in producing the 2013-2014 winter-spring crop. Facing this situation, Tuy Hoa city’s people’s committee has directed the localities and instructed farmers to clean up the remains of vegetations in the fields, renovate the sedemented paddy fields; burying stubbles, weeds, …to eradicate the epidemics roots to minimize the pests on plants. Mr. Ho Duc Tung, vice chairman of Tuy Hoa city’s people’s committee, let known, “The city is concentrating on draining, repairing the interior fields which landslide and sedemented due to rain and floods, to ensure meeting the deadline of producing crop. During the sowing time, it’s possible that the rice will still be affected by cold weather conditions, therefore, the city’s people’s committee has directed the Economic Division to closely follow the weather changes so as to direct the cooperatives’ with instructions given to the people, to timely minimize the damage caused by flood after sowing”.
Rain and storm has also caused 321m3 of field area landslide, sweeping away 47m of concrete drains in Phu Hoa district. The current difficulty is the issue of renovating sedemented rice paddy fields while the crop season is coming too near. Mr. Tran Van Hao in Hoa Thang commune (Phu Hoa district), let known, “The ditches break, the sand and land fall into the fields, in the past days, two workers and I have been renovating, still, there are loads of things to do”. As to the crop schedule, sowing time begins on December 20th, so not only Mr. Hao but also lot of other farmers in Phu Hoa district are concentrating on renovating the sedemented fields cause by rain and flood to be in time for sowing as allocated, to facilitate the water flow.
Mr. Bien Minh Tam, director of Phu Yen department of agriculture and rural development, let known that the department has directed the localities to use the seeds in an efficient way, breeds able to fight pests, it’s not advisable to use infected breeds; propagate the farmers to make the most use of the organic fertilizers in combination with using potash or phosphate fertilizers instead of imported fertilizers like DAP and NPK, so as to reduce producing expenditure.
