HA NOI (VNS) — The Viet Nam Union of Friendship Organisations (VUFO) was praised yesterday for successfully promoting the country’s image among international friends and mobilising assistance for key humanitarian programmes.

Addressing the union’s fifth National Congress that opened in Ha Noi, Nguyen Thien Nhan, President of the Viet Nam Fatherland Front’s Central Committee, said it had also contributed handsomely to the nation’s socio-economic development.

He also highlighted VUFO’s work in garnering support for Agent Orange/dioxin victims, connecting overseas Vietnamese and participating in international humanitarian programmes.

The National Congress has adopted “Peace, Friendship, Co-operation and Integration” as its theme.

Nhan said he highly valued the union’s success in mobilising international non-governmental aid over the last five years, saying that the US$1.4 billion that has been disbursed so far has helped alleviate poverty in the country.

He urged union members to keep up their performance and help people across the globe understand Viet Nam better.

Vu Xuan Hong who was re-elected VUFO President at the congress, said he was confident that the union would build on its strengths and rise up to meet any challenge, further enhancing the reputation of the country on the international arena and making greater contributions to national development.

On behalf of international delegates attending the Congress, Gunner Andersen, Country Director of Save the Children Viet Nam, also lauded the union for contributions that have helped the country maintain macroeconomic stability, enhance its external relations and attract greater international support.

He affirmed that the union’s international friends and the community of non-governmental organisations will continue providing effective support to Viet Nam’s poverty alleviation and sustainable development efforts. — VNS
