In 2013, HCM City reported revenues of VND238 trillion (US$10.1 billion), 1 per cent higher than the target.
This was due to a good effort considering the Government reduced, delayed, and waived taxes to help businesses tide over the economic crisis.
Its expenses topped VND42 trillion ($2 billion), 3.2 per cent less than the budgeted amount.

Customs intercept drug cutting agents
On December 31, HCM City customs found 4.8 kilos of drug precursors sent through express service by an individual from the city to Australia.
The package ostensibly had coffee, dried shrimp, and shower gel, but the two shower gel bottles contained precursors worth VND5 billion (US$250,000).
In the last three months, customs authorities discovered 12 cases of sending drug precursors through express service, seizing nearly 52kg worth over VND50 billion.

City budgets $3.5m on poverty reduction
HCM City is set to spend $3.5 million in 2014-15 on vocational training and loans for businesses to reduce poverty and improve living standards.
For the project, people earning VND16 million ($800) a year will be considered poor, three times the national poverty level.
Based on this, HCM City has 130,000 poor households or 7 per cent of the population.

$400m project to replace 81 weak bridges
A project to improve the national road network with Japanese official development assistance has begun.
It seeks to replace 81 weak bridges in 25 provinces nation-wide.
The first contract with 37 bidding packages, including for bomb and mine clearance and traffic safety consultancy, worth VND3.8 trillion ($180 million) has been given to Japan’s Katahira – Oriental joint venture.
