HA NOI (VNS)— Nearly 29,400 traffic accidents occurred in 2013, killing 9,369 people and injuring 29,500 others throughout the country.
According to a report from the National Traffic Safety Committee, delivered at an online conference on Tuesday in Ha Noi, last year saw fewer cases of accidents, deaths and injuries than in 2012.
Twenty-one provinces and cities had declining numbers in accidents, deaths and injuries, including Tay Ninh, Dong Nai and Quang Nam.
However, there were still 19 provinces and cities where the number of fatalities increased, including the four provinces of Gia Lai, Tra Vinh, Can Tho, while Lai Chau had increasing numbers of accidents, deaths and injuries.
Meanwhile, traffic jams in Ha Noi and HCM City were reduced, with hotspots plummeting from 124 to 57 in Ha Noi and no traffic jam lasting longer than 30 minutes in HCM City.
Noting that 2013 was the second year in which the number of deaths caused by traffic accidents were fewer than 10,000, Deputy PM Nguyen Xuan Phuc said that it was a respectable success among involved sectors, especially noting the efforts of the ministries of transport and public security in controlling traffic.
Phuc also urged provinces, cities, and State agencies to spare no efforts to ensure traffic safety during the upcoming Tet Festival (Lunar New Year).
He also called upon the Ministry of Transport to inspect vehicle loads, check all transport services to assure they obey safety regulations, and take advantage of monitoring and data centres to minimise traffic accidents. — VNS
