HA NOI (VNS) — Internet access connecting Viet Nam with other countries through the Asia-America Gateway (AAG) undersea cable will be fully repaired on January 9, 2014.

The information was provided by Nguyen Van Khoa, general director of FPT Telecom Company, adding that a cable-wielding ship will enter the waters where the cable cutout lies on January 1.

However, he said that the preparation speed depended on the weather conditions.

Sharing the same opinion, Lam Quoc Cuong, director of Viet Nam Telecom International (VTI) under the Viet Nam Posts and Telecommunications Corporation (VNPT), told Vnexpress online newspaper that necessary procedures for the preparation had been complete.

“The ship is expected to arrive on December 31 and finish the preparation before January 9, 2014″, he said. According to Cuong, backup cable lines helped ensure the speed of internet access although the capacity was not good as usual.

The cut-cable was found 278 kilometres off the coast of Vung Tau central city on December 20. During the past ten days, local internet service providers have put much effort to move the internet capacity to other lines, limiting the damage of customers.

Khoa said that FPT Telecom had paid three to four times more than normal prices for the capacity through the ground cables to help users connect international internet faster. — VNS
