Hundreds of traffic accidents during Tet holidays have claimed the lives of 163 people and wounded 388 others, said the National Commission for Traffic Safety.

33 people were killed on the first day of the Lunar New Year (January 31st) and 28 people on the third day of the Lunar New Year.

Traffic accident cases increased in comparison to last year Tet holidays but the number of deaths decreased.

The hotline of the commission received hundreds of calls from passengers, reporting on high price of bus tickets, overloaded buses…

Traffic Inspectors of Northern Province of Tuyen Quang fined a long-distance bus driver who charged three times higher than the price of a ticket yesterday and asked the bus driver to return money to passengers.

On the same day, traffic inspectors also fined a bus running from Loc Ninh to Ho Chi Minh City for speeding and passenger scramble.

The Commission said that there were many people driving motorbikes without helmets or after being drunk, zigzagging on streets and carrying three or four persons. Some of them even drove bikes in the opposite direction on one way streets.

This year Tet holidays last up to nine days. People will come back to big cities on last days of the vacation, making traffic serious congestions in entrances to big cities such as Ha Noi, Ho Chi Minh City…
