Addressing the meeting that focuses on discussing the High Commissioner for Human Rights’ report on human rights situation in 2013, Trung also said socio-economic policies should also pay appropriate attention to vulnerable groups.

The official emphasized that the world is facing many difficulties and challenges in ensuring people’s rights and freedom.

Therefore, ensuring and promoting human rights is first of all a duty of each nation, Trung said, adding that international cooperation, however, is necessary to fulfill the duty effectively.

The Vietnamese official also praised efforts by human rights mechanisms of the UN, the High Commissioner for Human Rights, the Office of the High Commissioner, and the international community in fostering dialogues and cooperation in this field, including the Universal Periodical Review.

On November 12 last year, Vietnam was elected to the UN Human Rights Council for the 2014-2016 tenure for the first time, as an appreciation of the international community for Vietnam’s great performance in protecting and promoting civil, political, economic, cultural, and social rights.
