Authorities in Thua Thien Hue Province have successfully dismantled a one-tonne bomb in A Luoi District with the support from foreign experts.
Major bomb taken on board in a lorry The dismantlement of the bomb, which was the biggest ever of its kind found in the province so far, was conducted on March 17.
The bomb, which was left from the US War, was found a week ago in a dry stream in Hong Kim Commune. As the bomb was too big and the terrain there was unfavourable, local authorities had to hire a crane to take it to a safe place for the dismantlement with the support of 14 people along. Foreign experts from an explosive dismantlement organisation called APOPO Vietnam also helped with the work.
It took one hour and a half for the team to carry the bomb to the selected location in a protected forest in Huong Phong Commune for safely dismantlement.
On March 12, the APOPO organisation signed a memorandum of understanding with Thua Thien Hue provincial government to finance EUR260,000 for bomb and landmine searching and dismantlement in A Luoi District. The project was funded by the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs for the implementation in 2014.
The German Ministry of Foreign Affairs has helped find and dismantle over 2,000 shrapnel bombs along with lots of explosives and safely removed 12 big bombs weighing from 250-1,000 kilos in the province since 1998.
