The 25-year-old driver Nguyen Huynh Ly, hailing from the southern province of Tien Giang, was captured after the Phu Nhuan District police hunted for him based on a report from his victim, 54-year-old Vietnamese-Canadian L.T.Y.M.

Ly then pleaded guilty to stealing from M. a handbag that contained CA$300, $200 and VND3 million in cash and several gold necklaces with diamonds.

The total value of these items is about $9,600.

According to the case file, at 8:00 pm on March 1, M’s relatives called a taxi from the Vinasun company to take M. from their house on Huynh Van Banh Street, Ward 14, Phu Nhuan District to Tan Son Nhat International Airport in nearby Tan Binh District.

When Ly drove his cab to their house, he saw many luggage items placed in the front.

After asking Ly to load the luggage onto the cab, M. turned to say good-bye to her relatives.

At this moment, the driver put a handbag from the luggage into his cab and then got in the vehicle and sped away.

Some of M.’s relatives chased after the cab on motorbikes but they failed to catch up with the car.

The theft was reported to police, who launched an investigation that led to the capture of Ly a day later.

The police have recovered all the stolen items from Ly and returned them to the woman.
