Deputy PM Hoang Trung Hai calls for joint efforts to manage and use energy and water sources effectively
Nhan Dan Online – Deputy Prime Minister Hoang Trung Hai has called for joint efforts of authorities and people in managing and using energy and water sources effectively and sustainably.
He also appealed to all people to participate in initiatives to protect the water sources and rivers to mitigate natural disasters and contribute to national energy security.
The Deputy PM made the call at a national meeting held this morning in Lai Chau city to observe World Water Day 2014 which falls on March 22.
The event saw the participation of Country Director of the World Bank Victoria Kwakwa, Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Nguyen Minh Quang, along with 5,000 local people in Lai Chau province.
Addressing the meeting, Deputy PM Hai highly valued the significance of World Water Day and this year’s theme ‘Water and Energy’; two important resources directly affecting the lives of people and the sustainable development of every country.
He said that Vietnam is facing many challenges, as 63% of its water flow originates from outside and when countries at the riverhead do not share or use water sources from trans-national rivers reasonably, Vietnam suffers. in addition, there is about 9,560 cubic metres per capita of renewable internal freshwater, each year, lower than the standard of 10,000 cubic metres per year.
Thus, he appealed to authorised agencies to strengthen the management over water sources and effectively use energy sources to reduce pressure, protect the environment and promote the socio-economic development.
Country Director of the World Bank Victoria Kwakwa appreciated Vietnam for its action and activities in response to the United Nations message on effective management and use of water and energy sources.
This year’s meeting is held in Lai Chau province as it is one of the localities at the riverhead of the Da River, where three major national hydro-electric power plants are located including Lai Chau, Son La and Hoa Binh.
World Water Day, held annually, aims to raise public awareness of the importance of water resources and promote the development of policies related to the sustainable management and use of water resources.
