The Thua Thien Hue’s People’s Committee yesterday lauded French art director/producer Philippe Bouler for his massive contributions to the success of the province’s hallmark Hue festival.
Informally dubbed “Mr. Festival” by Hue residents, Bouler, a revered art expert and master on lighting, is credited with experimenting and developing the Hue festival since he worked as the art director at the first festival in 2000.
He has taken several different roles at the festivals, which accentuate UNESCO-recognized Hue’s cultural identity and values and been instrumental to their success since.
Ngo Hoa, deputy chair of the provincial’s People’s Committee, head of the yearly Hue festival’s organizing board, stressed that Bouler has been key to the festival, which has made its name locally and abroad.
The expert is indicative of French people’s support for Vietnamese people and the strong ties between the two countries, Hoa noted.
Bouler shared that during his 15 years in Hue, he’s strongly impressed with its stunning nature, rich culture and hospitable people.
He added that he will continue to work with the Hue festival organizers along with conducting other cultural, education projects in the city, which he considers the most gorgeous place in Vietnam.
Bouler, 57, first arrived in Vietnam to direct a French puppetry festival under the initiative of the Association Francaise d’Action Artistique (Association of French Artistic Action) in 1984.
He has directed, produced, and provided consultation for over 50 festivals in the world, including Vietnam’s Hue Festival.
Last year, he worked with local artists to put on “OhLaLa- Music Festival Vietnam – France” in celebration of the 40th anniversary of diplomatic ties between Vietnam and France.
