According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, local farmers have harvested over 400,000 hectares of nearly 1.6 million hectares of winter-spring rice, with output averaging out at 6.3 to 6.4 tons of dried paddy (unhusked rice) a hectare.
Speaking to the Daily, local farmers said this year’s output is one ton higher than the same period last year for each hectare, making it a 10-year high.
Tran Van Hanh, a farmer in Long An Province, said farmers could gain around nine to 10 tons plus of fresh paddy from each hectare this year. With a cultivation area of 1.5 hectares, Hanh has harvested nearly 16 tons of fresh paddy.
Meanwhile, the Vietnam Food Association (VFA) said rice exports have sharply declined since early this month.
Last month, VFA member enterprises exported over 307,000 tons of rice while they sold just 105,000 tons abroad in the first 20 days of February. The association earlier targeted to export 300,000 to 350,000 tons of rice this month.
Pham Thai Binh, director of Can Tho City-based Trung An Co. Ltd., said local firms have faced tough competition with Thai and Indian rivals. Aside from the contracts signed with the Philippines late last year, few enterprises have secured large contracts with traditional markets such as Indonesia and Malaysia.
A source from VFA told the Daily that has lost a contract supplying 300,000 tons of white rice to Malaysia to Thailand. Thailand offered a price lower than Vietnam by around US$10-15 per ton.
