Vietnam is doing its best to assist foreign reporters in their activities on Phu Quoc Island in the southern province of Kien Giang to cover the search for the missing Malaysia Airlines flight MH370, said Deputy Transport Minister Pham Quy Tieu.

International journalists are not only given access to the search and rescue command stations and press conferences, but they are also allowed to accompany search teams during their missions.

Cheang Ka Chi from a Macau radio station expressed appreciation of the support from the local authorities, and praised local search and rescue forces for their efforts in the ongoing hunt for the plane that has gone missing since Saturday.

The Department of Press and Information under the Foreign Ministry has so far received requests of support from over 90 foreign correspondents from over 25 global press outlets, including Reuters, AP, Xinhua and Kyodo.

The department is also coordinating closely with Vietnamese representative agencies abroad, including those in Malaysia and China, to issue entry visas to international reporters.

In a related development, Kien Giang Province authorities are calling for the greater involvement of local fishermen in the search.

They also said the province is ready to welcome relatives of the missing passengers.

Meanwhile, with an aim to help foreign media obtain the latest information, the Foreign Ministry has set up a response team which will be on 24-hour standby.
