(VOV) – Deputy Prime Minister Vu Duc Dam has urged relevant ministries to accelerate efforts to raise public awareness of methods to treat and prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS.

At an online conference in Hanoi on June 13, Dam emphasised that HIV/AIDS treatment and prevention is complicated work.
He underscored the fact that drug users and prostitutes are two groups that are at high risk of contracting and transmitting the disease, and prevention efforts to target these groups should be accorded high priority.
Dam asked the Ministry of Public Security to coordinate with the Ministry of Health in stepping up communication campaigns among drug users.
Information on HIV/AIDS prevention among the youth should also be beefed up, Dam said, adding that measures should be undertaken to ensure that prevention is integrated into cultural exchanges and get-togethers at schools, especially for teenagers.
The National Committee for AIDS, Drugs and Prostitution Prevention and Control has reported that in the first half of this year there were 3,133 new reported cases of HIV, 1,388 full-blown AIDS and 462 deaths of the disease.
It is estimated there were roughly 25,684 prostitutes, mainly in the Red River Delta, north-central region, south-east region and Mekong delta region.
Prostitution prevention programmes and those supporting the reintegration of prostitutes into society are currently being implemented in 40 provinces and cities across the nation.
Combating drug-related crimes is also directly related to HIV/AIDS and further complicates prevention efforts, Dam said, noting that drug related crimes are on the uptick, both scale and quality.
