State President Truong Tan Sang will pay a four-day state visit to Japan starting on March 16 at the invitation of Emperor Akihito, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on Sunday.
Since Vietnam and Japan established their diplomatic relations on September 21, 1973, their ties have undergone some historical ups and downs until Japan resumed its ODA provision to the former in 1992.
The two countries’ multilateral ties have since broadened along with their increased mutual understanding and trust.
The two sides continued to develop their relationship into a reliable partnership in 2002 and into a strategic partnership in 2009, with economic cooperation being the brightest spot in bilateral relations.
In 2011, Japan was the first G7 country to recognize Vietnam as a market economy.
Currently, the two nations are working together in negotiations on the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) agreement.
Last year, two-way trade between the duo was estimated at US$25.6 billion, and the figure is expected to double in 2020.
Japan was a leading investor in Vietnam last year, with its total investment amounting to $5.7 billion, making up 26.6 percent of the latter’s total foreign direct investment.
As Vietnam’s leading ODA donor, Japan provided $21 billion in ODA to the Southeast Asian country from 1992 to 2013.
