Ho Chi Minh City’s police are hunting for two South Korean men who allegedly kidnapped one of their countrymen in an attempt to extort US$300,000 from him last month.
Shim Sung Bo, 46, and Bong Byung Gon, 57, are believed to be part of an international gang suspected of abducting Kim Hueng Sik, police said.
On March 13, 2012, Kim sold a restaurant in District 1 to Shim for $150,000.
Early this year Shim offered to sell it back to Kim for $300,000.
Kim refused and on March 26 Shim and two unidentified accomplices broke into his apartment and began beating him.
They threatened to kill him if he did not hand over the $300,000.
Following Kim’s repeated refusals, the three kidnappers took him to the restaurant, where Shim called Bong, a Korean named Nam Koung Soon, 38, and a Vietnamese named Nguyen Van Hieu, 31 to assist him in the beating.
Kim finally gave up and signed a payment agreement written out by Shim.
Shim then ordered his accomplices to have the agreement translated into Vietnamese while Nam stood watch over Kim.
The next day Shim left for the southern province of Binh Duong to attend to some business.
While Nam was distracted, Kim texted his friend, a Vietnamese woman, to ask for help.
The woman, referred to as P., informed police who rescued Kim and arrested Nam.
A police investigation remains underway.
