Cambodian police arrested four Vietnamese nationals, Thursday, for allegedly holding two of their countrymen for ransom, according to Cambodian media.

Three men and one woman were arrested on charges of kidnapping, torture and extortion, The Phnom Penh Post reported.

The group is accused of kidnapping two Vietnamese nationals from a casino in Kampot Province and holding them in Preah Sihanouk Province in an attempt to extort US$14,000 from their families, according to police.

Brigadier General Mao Chan Meak Thurith, deputy chief of the Kampot provincial police, said the four suspects were arrested after their families lodged complaints with his office on Tuesday.

“The four Vietnamese [suspects] worked at a casino along the national border, in Kampot province’s Prek Chak commune,” he said. “They kidnapped the victims, who are gamblers, from Kampot to illegally detain them for ransom.”

The victims were the targets of a loan scam operating out of the casino, according to police. After the men were unable to pay back money they had borrowed from the casino they were kidnapped.

The Cambodia Daily identified the two victims as Vo Phan Nong, who was rescued at a house in Pi commune after being held for a week; Dong Minh Tieng was discovered at a house in Bei commune where he had been held for 23 days.
