Tinh, also known as Giang Pa Tinh, is a resident of Pa My Commune in the northern mountainous province’s Muong Nhe District.

He and seven others were found guilty of offences, including attacking officials on duty with weapons, violating Article 83 of the Penal Code.

The other defendants were given sentences ranging from 15 to 20 years.

The defendants were also ordered to compensate the family of the soldier they killed with VND138 million (US$6,480) and provide a monthly allowance of VND300,000 to support the two children of the deceased until they turn 18.

The court also punished 21 other accomplices, accused of procuring and transporting weapons, with jail terms of 16 months to eight years.

Prosecutors said that the defendants mounted an armed attack on a border station in Muong Nhe District’s Sen Thuong Commune on October 15, 2012. One border guard was killed and four policemen injured in the attack. — VNS
