Millions of overseas Vietnamese who fail to register to keep their Vietnamese nationality as of this July 1 are going to lose it under Vietnamese law, a top official said at a government meeting on Tuesday.
Nguyen Thien Nhan, chairman of the Fatherland Front, which monitors government activities and policies, asked the government to revise current regulations to prevent the scenario.
Under a government decree issued in 2009, overseas Vietnamese, or Viet Kieu, who did not lose their Vietnamese citizenship before July 1, 2009 can register with Vietnam’s representative offices in foreign countries to keep their nationality.
The registration deadline was set for July 1 this year.
However, so far only 6,000 out of four million overseas Vietnamese people have completed the registration, Nhan said.
