A Ho Chi Minh City court sentenced a man and his mother to four and one years in prison, respectively, on Wednesday for attempting to rob a Japanese tourist last year.

According to the indictment, on September 7, Chau Hong Liem rode his mother Le Thi Ben around on a bicycle, searching for potential victims, news website VnExpress reported.

The pair spotted a Japanese tourist waiting for a red light at the Nam Ky Khoi Nghia – Ly Tu Trong intersection in District 1.

They stopped and approached the tourist, asking him to buy postcards.

While their victim was distracted, Liem stole a wallet from his bag. He was caught in the act by a motorbike mechanic working on the opposite corner.

The mechanic shouted in alarm, inspiring neighbors to rush in and apprehend Liem and his mother.
