“The old trees have witnessed the defensive battles of local people against the French, Japanese and the US. They offered shelter for nationalist guerrillas,” he said.
Nguyen Khac Tho, an 83-year-old local, said these trees protected villagers from starvation during defensive wars with their pungent fruits.
“I hope the Ngoc Mountains will become a popular tourists’ destination soon,” VnExpress quoted him as saying.
The thi trees in the Ngoc Mountains were recognized at a recent meeting of the Vietnam Heritage Trees Council that assessed nearly 20 applications from 12 cities and provinces nationwide.
The council is still examining the rest of the applications.
