— By Friday afternoon, about 100 foreigners who are representatives of foreign embassies and international organizations had registered for participation in the tribute-paying ceremony for the late General Vo Nguyen Giap, which is scheduled to last from 7:30 am to 9:00 pm Saturday in Hanoi, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported.


— Leaders of foreign countries and international organizations continue to send condolences to Vietnam over the death of General Vo Nguyen Giap, who died on October 4 at the age of 103. Among the condolers are President of the Council of State and President of the Council Ministers of Cuba Raul Castro Ruz, Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika, Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff, Uruguayan President Jose Mujica Cordano, Patric Jorland, chairman of the France-Vietnam Friendship Association, the head of the Moscow Economics and Law Institute Vladimir Bulanov, and Johan Peanberg, chairman of the Sweden Committee for Solidarity with Vietnam.

— As part of the two-day State funeral for the late General Vo Nguyen Giap which began at 12 pm Friday, the tribute-paying ceremony will take place from 7:30 am to 9:00 pm Saturday, October 12, and the memorial service will begin at 7:00 am and end at 8:15 am on Sunday in Hanoi. The casket of the late General will be carried to Noi Bai Airport at 10:30 am Sunday and the aircarft that carres the coffin will take off at 11 am. The plane will land in Dong Hoi Airport, Quang Binh Province at 12:25 pm, and the burial service will begin at 1 pm and end at 5 pm at Quang Binh Commune, Quang Trach District. All these events will be broadcast live by the Vietnam Television and the Radio Voice of Vietnam.


— Cars and motorbikes brought into Vietnam by overseas Vietnamese as transferred property must be subject to VAT and excise tax (special consumption tax), according to a directive of Deputy Prime Minister Vu Van Ninh, who asked the Fioanance Ministry to impose the taxes on such vehicles.


— Police in Hanoi arrested Pham Dinh Huy, a journalist who is the deputy head of the Economics Division of Xay Dung Newspaper under the Construction Ministry for alleged extortion of money from a number of traffic inspectors in Phuc Tho District. Initial information said that Huy forced these inspectors to give him VND10 million (US$480).


— The Food Safety Department has asked the National Food Safety and Hygiene Testing Institute to take samples of Aoptamil milk imported from the UK for testing to identify the concentration of aluminum in the milk. The result of the testing must be reported to the Department before October 15, 2013.


— The torrential rain that lasted for 30 minutes yesterday evening flowed many areas in Ho Chi Minh City, with some streets submerged under 0.5 meter of water. Heaviest inundation were seen in such streets as Hoa Binh in Tan Binh District and District 11, Au Co and Dong Den in Tan Binh District, and Khuong Viet in Tan Phu District. Traffic congestion occurred on many routes as numerous vehicles broke down.

— A delegation from nearly 20 Japanese businesses visited Ho Chi Minh City’s Integrated Circuits Design Research and Education Center (ICDREC) on Friday to explore opportunities to develop a microchip semi-conductor industry. During the visit, these Japanese businesses expressed their interest in HCM City Hi-Tech Zone and its associated investment incentives.


— The State Bank of Vietnam yesterday sold 15,000 taels of gold to 11 commercial banks and companies in a bid at the highest bid winning price of VND37.29 million (US$1,760) per tael, slightly less than the market price. By the end of yesterday, the Saigon Jewelry company sold gold for VND37.55 million per tael, VND4.62 million higher the world price.

— Both Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic overcame big challenges in their quarterfinals at the Shanghai Masters on Friday, October 11, and moved a step closer to the final. Top-ranked Nadal saved three set points and finally closed out a 20-minute tiebreak in the first set against Switzerland’s Stanislas Wawrinka before winning 7-6 (10), 6-1. Djokovic, the defending champion, needed nearly 2 ½ hours to rally past France’s Gael Monfils 6-7 (4), 6-2, 6-4.
