Hai Duong became the next province in Vietnam to take action against drug use among truck and bus drivers, ordering local transport businesses to fire 61 drivers who tested positive for narcotics.

They were among 1,800 drivers in the province who had to take drug tests, which was organized by the departments of transport and of health and the traffic police division, according to a report by Tuoi Tre newspaper.

The move is necessary to ensure safety in transport activities, a Transport Dept. representative was quoted by Tuoi Tre as saying.

Hai Phong City in February pioneered in cracking down on drug use in bus and truck drivers, following persistent media coverage on the issue.

The city’s transport authorities later also ordered businesses to sack nearly 200 drivers who tested positive for drugs.

In a similar move, authorities in Ho Chi Minh City last month ordered transport companies to organize health checks for their drivers and tested them for drugs.

Drivers found to take drugs have to be dismissed and their names would be blacklisted so that they cannot find other driving jobs.
