Tours of the villa of Cong tu Bac Lieu, the legendary rich playboy who lived in southern Vietnam in the early 1900s, are now available.


Tran Trinh Huy was famous for his wealth and lavish spending. According to one of many well known anecdotes, Huy had once burned money to make che (sweep soup).


His house was built in Bac Lieu City, on Dien Bien Phu Street when he was about 19 years old. The house was designed by French architects and all of the materials used are said to have been brought from France. Once complete, the house was considered the most impressive private residence in the southern region.


Recently, most of the furniture has been gathered and restored for display. Tran Trinh Duc, Huy’s son, who is still alive and willing to tell their family stories to visitors.
