President Sang’s visit to the US and the upcoming establishment of a comprehensive partnership between the two countries have received much attention from international observers.
According to Ernest Bower, senior advisor and leading expert in Southeast Asian affairs at the Washington-based Centre for Strategic and International Studies, the day the two countries announced the establishment of a comprehensive partnership is the most beautiful day of the two countries’ relations.
In an interview with a Vietnam News Agency correspondent, Bower said the way President Sang handled the visit and the recent speeches by the two state leaders proved that Vietnam and the US have new trust to upgrade their bilateral ties.
In the next several years, the US and Vietnam will move forward in numerous areas – from the economy to security – to a comprehensive strategic partnership, said Bower.
On the occasion, the former US Ambassador to Vietnam, Michael Michalak, said the two countries have had a very good relationship up to date, and will continue to make progress in the coming time.
A comprehensive partnership is the way it should be for the bilateral ties between the two countries, the former ambassador said, adding that President Sang’s visit is a good way to start the upgrading process.
The next step is to define the content for a comprehensive relationship between Vietnam and the US, he noted.
Commenting on the bilateral relations between Vietnam and the US, Professor Nguyen Manh Hung from George Mason University in Virginia said the relationship has reached a new height with the official classification of a “comprehensive” level.
The experts shared the view that the upgrading of bilateral relations is a huge step, bringing forth active results for the two countries in particular, and the region in general.-VNA
