HA NOI (VNS) — The National Assembly Standing Committee wrapped up its 28th session on Saturday following discussions on the socio-economy, security and defence of the Tan Rai and Nhan Co bauxite projects in the Central Highlands.
The two pilot projects to exploit bauxite to produce aluminium, invested by the Viet Nam National Coal-Mineral Industries Group (Vinacomin), are the first of their kind in Viet Nam. Tan Rai factory was handed over to Vinacomin on October 1, 2013.
NA Standing Committee members raised question about how to reduce dependence on foreign experts to master imported technologies and the impacts of transport on regional roads.
Delighted by initial the outcome of the use of technology turning red mud, released during the exploitation of bauxite, into steel, NA Chairman Nguyen Sinh Hung said investors and concerned agencies should step up research into economical and scientific methods for wider application.
According to Deputy Prime Minister Hoang Trung Hai, the projects had contributed to the economic development of Lam Dong and Dak Nong.
He said Government calculations showed that the projects would continue to generate income as aluminium prices rise.
The Deputy PM also clarified issues relating to environmental protection and expertise and technologies employed in the projects. — VNS
