The Preventive Medicine Department under the Ministry of Health announced on May 2 that no new measles deaths had been recorded, despite a raft of new cases on the day.

Hospitals nationwide dealt with 47 new measles patients, raising the total number to 3,930 across 61 out of 63 provinces and cities nationwide so far this year, according to the ministry.

Most of the patients are being treated at Bach Mai Hospital, the National Hospital of Paediatrics and the Central Tropical Hospital in the north.

As of May 2, a total of 85.1 percent of children throughout the country had been vaccinated against the virus, up 0.3 percent from a day earlier.

Seventeen cities and provinces have recorded over 95 percent of immunisation while An Giang province, Ho Chi Minh City and Binh Phuoc in the south and the northern provinces of Dien Bien and Thai Nguyen posted the lowest rates, ranging from 60 percent to 70 percent.

The ministry asked preventive medicine units and health clinics to work around the clock during the Southern Liberation Day (April 30) and May Day (May 1) while encouraging people to apply measures against measles on those days.

Meanwhile on May 2, a delegation led by Deputy Health Minister Nguyen Thanh Long inspected efforts against measles in the central province of Nghe An.-VNA
